intro
While there are several potential forms silver can take when present in a cat's genetic make-up, not all are controlled
by a specific gene. Rather, many forms are only products of the combination of individual genes, or are made possible by the lack
of others. This guide will not identify every
Silver Inhibitor
: SS/Ss = silver, ss = non-silver
The inhibitor gene determines whether or not silver will be present in a cat's coat in the first place.
It does not have any say in what form the silver will take, as this is solely the work
of outside modifier genes (see below ).
entirely irrelevant to the cat itself, as they have nothing to act upon. In such cases, determining
what modifier genes the cat carries is only relevant in determining potential offspring.
Silver Tabby
A cat with any form of tabby(dominant alleles in the agouti gene) alongside silver will be aptly termed a silver tabby.
Silver will appear along edges of the more distinct tabby markings, though this effect can be hard to spot in those of
the ticked variety, where it is often confused for shading on a solid coat.
Smoke
Unlike other categories of silver, smoke is the result of a lack of specifying genes.
If no tabby or other forms of modifiers are present, but the cat is SS or Ss for silver, the coloring will appear as a
soft shading dispersed across an otherwise solid coat.
