  • Lakers History

    The Lakers Dynasty began in 1947. Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen started the franchise, they made the name: Lakers. As a result of the "Land of 10,000 lakes" (Minneapolis). John Kundla was named their first head coach, they got him from the College of St. Thomas. In their first season, the team already established a "Big Three." This consisted of Point gaurd: Herm Schaefer, Foward Jim Pollard, and center George Mikan. The big man was considered to be one of the first best players ever. The Big three led the Lakers to a leagues best: 43-17. In 1948, they moved from the NBL to the BAA, which was considered a harder league. For Mikan's Lakers, like the NBL they were the lauge's best in the BAA. Mikan averaged 28.3 points per game, setting a BAA record for the time. That same season in 1949, he carried the team to their first championship beating the Washington Capitols (No, not the hockey team) 4-2. The following season the Lakers repaeted as champs, with a 51-17 record. In the next season, althoguh Mikan won the socring for a third strsaight time, the Lakers lost to Rochester Royals. The Lakers that season had an infamous game, where they to the Fort Wayne Pistons 19-18, for the lowest scoring game in history.
    In the 1951-52 season the Lakers for the first time finished second in the division. Yet, they won the finals verse the Knicks in seven games. The Lakers the following season beat the Knicks again. In the 53-54 season, Mikan was dealing with knee problems all year. Yet, he managed 18 PPG. He had help from Clyde Lovellette, who was drafted in the 1952 season. The pair led the Lakers to a third straight championship. They beat the Nationals in seven games. Mikan retired at the end of that season. After his retirement, the Laker struggled the next few season and in the 1958 draft had the first pick and drafted Laker great Elgin Baylor. That season, he led them to the NBA finals, but they were swept by the Celtics. This began a long time rivarly between the two teams. In the 1953-54 season, Mikan was dealing with knee prbolems the whole season. Yet, he still managed 18 PPG.
